Alpine and Marathon Texas
The allure of of the Old West is alive and well, and real, in these towns. So are dust storms and high winds. Some stalwart cyclists rode 20+ miles in these challenging conditions, others such as myself, deferred for safety reasons. My vision issues and contact lenses could not accommodate the grit.
After our early morning trial of cycling was thwarted, the group explored these towns, which had murals, art galleries, coffee shops, real cowboys. Eventually a long hot tub soak at Gage Hotel was in order, while watching the winds rip the trees well into the evening. This is a Texas Historic landmark built by Alfred Gage in 1926-27 to accommodate his business interests and large ranching operations. It has beautiful exposed wood beams, adobe walls and fireplaces, and stone tile showers.
This week , I’ll return philanthropic focus to American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation Emerging Leader Institute. I hope you’ll consider contributing, in honor of the thousands of medical students who recently matched into Family Medicine Residency this month. Our work is not done, however , as those new recruits will still not provide enough access so that every American will have an ongoing relationship with a family physician and continuing, consistent site for primary care, which they deserve.
